JOE Lineage
Contrology is not a method I “trained in.”
It is a system I was taught to preserve.
I am a third-generation Contrology teacher, working in a direct and uninterrupted lineage that traces back to Joseph Pilates himself, through Jay Grimes and Wade Edwell.
This lineage matters. Contrology was never meant to be interpreted, diluted, or reinvented. It was meant to be passed on intact, and that integrity shapes every session at JOE.
Joseph Pilates
Founder of Contrology
Joseph Hubertus Pilates developed Contrology as a complete system for restoring the body to health through precise, purposeful movement.
He addressed strength, posture, breath, coordination, and discipline as inseparable elements of a well-functioning body.
Joseph Pilates did not believe in shortcuts. He believed in practice, order, and integrity of the work.
Jay Grimes
Direct student of Joseph Pilates
Jay Grimes was personally taught by Joseph Pilates in the original New York studio and became one of the few entrusted to carry the work forward exactly as it was taught.
Known for his exacting eye and deep respect for the system, Jay preserved Contrology in its original form. He did not adapt the method to suit the body, he taught the body to rise to the work.
Wade Edwell
Second-generation Contrology teacher
Wade studied directly under Jay Grimes and is widely regarded for his clarity, precision, and depth of understanding.
Through Wade, I received my training, carrying the lineage forward with both integrity and care, preserving the system while teaching it intelligently and respectfully.
My Practice
Every session at JOE reflects this lineage:
• The original order of the work
• The integrity of the system
• The belief that the body can be trained, not accommodated
